Ambassador Cason meets with Director of Transparency International’s local chapter in Paraguay

To discuss upcoming national elections

The Ambassador of the United States of America, James C. Cason met with Ms. Pilar Callizo, Director of Transparency International’s local chapter in

Paraguay to discuss the upcoming national elections scheduled for April 20, 2008.  Ms. Callizo presented Transparency Paraguay’s current technical assistance efforts in helping identify and  denounce potential electoral fraud, which includes following up with the Public Ministry on the prosecution of cases involving possible electoral crimes.  She stressed the important role that government institutions such as the Controller General’s Office, the Public Ministry, and the Ombudsmen play in monitoring electoral fraud.

Ambassador Cason and Ms. Callizo discussed the importance of having impartial elections and that both the international community and a wide variety of diverse local organizations should play an important role in pre-election and election monitoring.
