Ambassador Cason welcomes the Paraguayan Youth Ambassadors 2008

The Ambassador of the United States of America, James C. Cason welcomed the second group of ten Paraguayan youths that traveled to the United States under the Youth Ambassadors Program. The event took place at Ambassador Cason’s residence. Ambassador

 

Cason congratulated the group of young students after their two and a half week trip to Washington, D.C. and the state of Kansas.

Ambassador Cason gave each Youth Ambassador a commemorative coin in recognition of their achievement and participation in the program. Alhelí Aranda, Germán Caballero and Ever Ruiz Díaz (from Asunción),  Natalia González (from Ñemby), Dalmalia González (from Luque), Thirza Klassen (from Filadelfia), Jazmín Larroza (from Santa Rita), José Oviedo (from Capiatá), Luis Recalde (from Yaguarón) and Silvana Riveros (from San Lorenzo) briefly talked about their experience in the United States, and after a musical number, barbeque was served for everyone.

These ten Paraguayan students, all of them between 15 and 18 years old, traveled to the United States on January 31, returning on February 16. Along with ten Youth Ambassadors from Uruguay, participants visited the White House, the Capitol, the Abraham Lincoln Monument , between others. At the Department of State they met Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon. The Paraguayan group traveled to its Partner state of Kansas afterwards where they met the Governor of Kansas, Kathleen Sebelius and Senator Marcy Francisco. They were hosted by local families, participated in community events and attended local high schools.

About the Program:

The Youth Ambassadors Program is a program of the Department of State of the United States of America by which outstanding youths, from low income families, leaders in their community, visit the United States for two and a half weeks.

The purpose of the program is to offer new international opportunities and experiences so that young participants can broaden their knowledge about culture, society and education in the United States. They are also able to improve their English language skills, promote their leadership abilities, live with local host family, exchange points of views with young students and serve as Ambassadors projecting a positive image of Paraguay.
