| More Free Cataract Surgeries Done with the Support of the U.S. Embassy April 11, 2008 With the support of the U.S. Embassy, the Paraguayan Society of Ophthalmology sponsored 30 cataract surgeries under its Operate at Home with Security and Responsibility program. To date, 80 free cataract surgeries have been given to Paraguayan patients with limited resources. |
On April 11 and 12, Ambassador Cason visited the Society of Ophthalmology's Center of Diagnosis and Treatment to see the patients operated under this program and those who would benefit from future surgeries.
For this third series of surgeries, the American company Alcon, in partnership with the U.S. Embassy, donated intraocular lenses and surgical kits that enabled ophthalmologists of the Paraguayan Society of Ophthalmology to perform the 30 free surgeries.
The Society's initiative, launched in October 2007, aims to provide cataract surgeries that are performed by renowned local surgeons at no cost to low-income patients.
The U.S. Embassy supports the initiatives of Paraguayan organizations, such as the Paraguayan Society of Ophthalmology, to bring first rate medical care to Paraguayans with limited resources.
