Embassy awards 50 Scholarships for students in Coronel Oviedo

November 10, 2009

On Tuesday, November 10, Ambassador Liliana Ayalde presented certificates of recognition to 25 students from 9th grade and 25 university students that were winners of the seventh annual scholarship program to study English at the Paraguayan-American Bi-national Center (CCPA) in Coronel Oviedo. The event was held in the “Espacio Cultural Gobau”, in Coronel Oviedo.

Through this scholarship program the U.S. Embassy is able to recognize and reward those young Paraguayans that, despite their economic limitations, excel in their efforts and are dedicated to their studies, leadership, and community service. This full English scholarship will enable these students to strive for a more complete education.

Winners went through two pre-selection stages. In the first stage, school academic grades were taken into account and in the second stage motivation and self-confidence were evaluated in personal interviews. Attached is a list in alphabetical order of the 50 outstanding scholarship winners.

Currently, 784 young Paraguayans are benefiting from full English scholarships, 628 of those are high school students and 156 are university students. With the scholarships awarded on this occasion, the total number of scholarships amount to 844.

It is noteworthy to mention the support of civil society organizations and educational institutions, particularly the valuable support of the CCPA, without whom this venture could not take place.
