U.S. Congressional delegation visits Paraguay

November 13, 2008

On November 11-13, Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY) led an eight-member U.S. Congressional delegation, the largest in history to come to Paraguay, in a visit for official meetings and various other activities.

On November 11, the delegation met with President Fernando Lugo and members of the National Congress of Paraguay.  On November 12, the delegation participated in a ceremony commemorating the 130th Anniversary of President Rutherford B. Hayes’ arbitration of the Chaco region that favored Paraguay with a book donation to the Rutherford B. Hayes Elementary School, a presentation of a U.S. flag and framed copies of the Hayes Decision, and a rededication to the school highlighting U.S. Embassy support to fix the school’s bathrooms and classrooms.

The Congressional delegation also visited a Peace Corps community program in Limpio, attended an arts and crafts fair at Paraguay Vende, and watched a traditional dance performance at the Cabildo Museum.
