Graduation and Scholarship Ceremony for 40 ESL Public School Teachers

December 12, 2008

Ambassador Liliana Ayalde presented 20 scholarships to Paraguayan public school teachers who teach English as a foreign language (EFL).  These scholarships are a continuation of a program, begun one year ago as a pilot, to improve the level of English and enhance the methods of instruction employed by Paraguayan public school teachers.  Paraguayan Minister of Education and Culture, Horacio Galeano Perrone, and Executive Board Chairman of the Paraguayan-American Cultural Center (CCPA), Carlos Jorge Biedermann, were on hand to join the Ambassador in recognizing these teachers.

Ambassador Ayalde also presented diplomas to the 20 graduates of the inaugural class.
To contribute to educational reform in Paraguay, the U.S. Embassy, Ministry of Education and Culture, and the CCPA signed an agreement to educate public school teachers in this regard.  For the duration of one year, a training program takes place at the CCPA’s branch in San Lorenzo and includes EFL methodology, interactive conversation, and preparing teachers to train fellow EFL teachers from other schools.  Curriculum includes U.S. culture and values, class preparation, textbook selection, and EFL materials utilization.
