Ambassador Ayalde presents youth leaders of indigenous origin

Today,
Ambassador Liliana Ayalde, officially presented the Paraguayan delegation of six indigenous leaders who will be traveling to the U.S. for five weeks to participate in the intensive academic exchange program “Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders”.   These six student leaders were presented with a certificate by Ambassador Ayalde recognizing this achievement.  The President of the Paraguayan Indigenous Institute, Margarita Mbywangy, participated in the event, and offered remarks thanking the Embassy for giving this opportunity to indigenous people. 

The list of nominees selected for this program includes:

Sonia Montserrat Moreira Atirillo, from Santa Teresita, Mcal. Estigarribia, Dpto. de Boqueron

Mirta Gabriela Perez Loewen, from Campo Largo, Dpto. de Boquerón

The purpose of this program is to give Latin American University students of indigenous origin the opportunity to attain a deeper understanding of the United States and further develop their leadership skills.

Latin American countries participating during 2009 are: Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay. The youth leader program is a key component of the President’s Partnership for Latin American Youth. Total funding will reach $75,000,000 for diverse exchange programs, English language instruction, scholarship. The program seeks to offer new opportunities to thousands of Latin American youth and assist them with improving their skills to be able to obtain higher levels of employment.
